The Lined Seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) is by far the most common seahorses we have. They come in a variety of colors, although brown or black is the most common. Out of the 100's we get a year, we may get 10-20 that are colored. The ones we sell as "colored" will be Orange (blaze or pale orange, sometimes with white patches), Red (cherry or brick, sometimes with white patches) or Yellow (bright banana yellow). In the wild they eat live shrimp and copepods, but can be trained to eat frozen brine or mysis in the aquarium. They show off their colors best if there is at least something in the aquarium brightly colored, like a sponge. Males carry the fry and give live birth, sometimes to over 100 tiny fry. Fry are difficult (but not impossible) to raise. They are very slow eaters, so choose tankmates carefully, as they are intimidated by faster moving fish.
